Cycle tour along the Maare-Moselle cycle path

Radtour über den Maare-Mosel-Radweg

The Maare-Moselle cycle path winds for 58 kilometres from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues. The cycle path was opened on the former railway line in 1998. Characterised by a maximum gradient of 2.5 % and various attractions such as the ‘Großes Schlitzohr’ ('big rascal') cycle tunnel, the trail is also perfect for families with children. Of course, it is also possible to cycle only parts of the route.

You can also make short detours to the so-called adventure loops. In addition to the Daun maars, the lava bomb in Strohn or the castles in Manderscheid are also worth seeing. Individual stages are available from Gillenfeld to Plein (7 km) or from Wittlich to Lieser (15 km).

Our tour starts at the old railway station in Daun and takes us about 35 km to our destination in Wittlich. After just a few pedal strokes, you reach the Daun viaduct. Due to its height of 30 metres, you have a beautiful view over the district town from there. After just two more kilometres, you reach the first attraction: the ‘Großes Schlitzohr’ tunnel. With a length of 560 metres, this is the second longest cycle tunnel in Germany.

Up to Gillenfeld, the route runs almost continuously with a slight gradient - perfect to prepare for the slight ascent between Gillenfeld and Eckfeld. However, there is also the option of taking a detour to the ‘Strohn-Mückeln’ loop (approx. 12 km). This goes along the lava bomb and the volcano house in Strohn. Back on the railway line, the cycle path now leads steadily downhill into the Moselle valley. Once in Wittlich, you can take a short tour through the old town centre, where you can visit the market square and the former synagogue. You can get back on the Maare-Moselle cycle bus, which runs daily every two hours between Bernkastel-Kues and Wittlich. However, you should book a space for your bike in advance.
